MARCH 14th, 2026

What is the CUJC?

The Canadian University Jiu-Jitsu Championship (CUJC) is the first-ever national-level inter-university BJJ competition in Canada, and one of the first of its kind anywhere in the world.

Organized by CUJA and hosted at Toronto Metropolitan University in March 2026, the CUJC unites student-athletes from across the country in a groundbreaking celebration of technique, discipline, and university spirit. This isn’t just another tournament; it’s a historic milestone.

Never before has a university-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition of this scale, structure, and sanctioning been organized by students, for students, with national coordination and support. Backed and sanctioned by the Ontario Jiu-Jitsu Association (OJA), the CUJC features men’s and women’s gi and no-gi divisions, as well as Canada’s first-ever co-ed quintet bracket a bold step toward gender equity and innovation in the sport.

More than just a competition, CUJC is a pioneering model for what collegiate sports can become: inclusive, community-driven, student-led, and built around values that reflect the diversity and resilience of Canadian society. This championship marks a turning point where Canadian university Jiu-Jitsu takes its place on the national and global stage, and begins building a legacy.

Competition Format & Divisions

The Canadian University Jiu-Jitsu Championship (CUJC) is designed to be both inclusive and high-level, offering a variety of competitive opportunities that reflect the diversity and commitment of student-athletes across the country.

Divisions

CUJC will feature three main types of divisions, open to verified university students only:

Women’s Divisions Gi & No-Gi

Under 60kg / Over 60 kg. Beginner & Intermediate (No brown belts or higher allowed)

Co-Ed Quintet Division (CUJC’s Flagship Format)

Teams of 3 male and 2 female competitors, weight class separation; coaches select team members strategicallyMatches follow a winner-stays-on This division has the highest point value in the championship

Scoring System & University Champion: Points will be awarded based on performance across all divisions.

Each win earns points for the competitor’s university, with higher point weight given to the co-ed quintet matches to reflect their team-based, strategic format.

At the end of the competition, the university with the highest cumulative score across all divisions will be declared the CUJC Overall Champion and awarded the CUJC Championship Cup — a traveling trophy that the winning school will hold for one year before defending or passing it on.
